Clarence Jeffries VC

Clarence Smith Jeffries was born in Newcastle in 1894. He had led attacks on German machine-gun posts during the attack on Passchendaele. He captured several guns and killed or captured their crews before he was killed at just 22 years of age. After the war his father went to Belgium and personally led the successful search for his grave. Jeffries was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 12th October 1917 before he died. (Source: Australian War Memorial).
